For the Dogs: Kennel Club holding match to prepare canines for competition
Like many dog owners, Sue Shelton has great affection for her canines, purebred keeshonds and English setters. She refers to them as “my babies” and said the keeshonds even played a parenting role in her son’s life.
“They are fabulous family dogs. They raised my son,” Shelton said of the keeshonds, a dog bred to be a companion on Dutch barges in Holland. “They’re not a back yard dog. They want to be with you.”
The match, sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, is open to anyone interested in learning how to compete in a dog show. Dogs entered must be purebred. Cost is $5 for a pre-entry or $8 the day of the match.
Shelton said the match is designed for those who want to practice with their dog in a show setting but not receive championship points typically amassed in a dog show. Spectators are also welcome.
“You’re not under the pressure that you would be at a regular show,” said Shelton, who encouraged spectators from the community to attend the event. “This is very relaxed. You don’t have to wear suits or nylons. When you go to a show, you really gussy up. Here, it’s for play.”
Shelton has owned keeshonds, which resemble chows, since 1972 and started showing them in 1990. Residents of Rockdale since 1996, Sue Shelton and her husband have been members of the Conyers Kennel Club for three years.
“We were looking for a kennel club where we could meet other dog owners and enjoy the camaraderie,” said Shelton.
With roughly 30 members, the Conyers Kennel Club is a nonprofit dedicated to furthering interest in purebred dogs. It’s members hail from Rockdale, Newton, Walton and Henry counties.
In addition to the dog matches, the Conyers Kennel Club also sponsors dog shows in the Atlanta area; a Meet the Breed Day, where the members of the public can educate themselves on various dog breeds; and handling classes, where people can learn how to train their dog (and themselves) for competitions.
The Conyers Kennel Club is also involved in several charitable efforts, including scholarship programs, canine therapy for elementary school students and support to law enforcement.

NGA News - OPKC weekend update; welcomes new kennel
The 2nd race is a C 550 race and no one is more overdue than Mr. Clark. He is a grade A talent down two grades and needs to find his mojo again. There is no big early speeder here, and all he has to do is be around early on, and he will be able to get up for the win. The post suits him well. Time to put up or shut up. Recent winners Sir Stewie and Git N Sassy could provide and early challenge, and don't forget UCME Disturbed from the rail. (6-4-3-1) Race 7 is an A 550 event that should be a heated battle on the lead. Hs Babe looks like the one to beat with a good post position and 5 efforts in a row in the quiniela. Her only thing is that she can be short at the end of the race and she might have trouble holding on late in this race. She has some talented greyhounds chasing her including recent stakes finalist Mandy Of Ruckus, hard closing Where's Dismiss, and Miss Sylvie from her best box the 1. (8-3-7-1) Race 10 is an A 550 race with one of the hottest greyhounds at the racetrack in tow, Seeking Beauty. Beauty has won 5 of her last 6 races. Each of them have come in commanding fashion, and in some ultra fast times. She has been burning up the inside part of the track and gets yet another rail post position to start this race from. Expect her to break, and for this race to be over early on again. Trying to ruin her run will be the speedy Wild Boy Andy, the posted up veteran Hallo Mitch, and ankle burner La's Gigi. (2-5-1-8) Race 11 is an A 550 race that might just be won by anyone! There is all kinds of talent here from the young and the old, and if everything goes right for any of them, they might have a chance to upset tonight. Leading the way though has to be the recent runner-up in the finals of the 2011 Jacksonville Sprint Classic, Kiowa Adara Art. Closer to the rail in this race with no big speed to his inside, gives him room to rush the turn and helps him find a way to win. Watch out for Jl's Dutch Jem. Hot off a rest, this back to back winner is firing on all cylinders. Solid competitor Smokin Az Becket and closer Tipsy Brutus W will also be in contention. (4-8-6-2) Race 15 is an A 660 race where the hottest thing going over the added distance gets another chance to win. Ww's Gucci has taken to the new course like a fish does to water. She has been more than successful with 4 wins in her last 6 efforts. She has not missed the money and can win from the front, or from off the pace. No matter what happens here, she is the one to beat.
