How To: Sync Google Contacts with Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 ...

If you’re using both Google and the new Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 and would like to keep your address book in sync, you can do this indirectly by the use of your Mac Address Book. This is also how you’d go about getting Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 in sync with the contacts on your Android phone. Read on for directions on how to set this up.

As always before running any sync operation, make sure you back up your contacts in case something goes horribly wrong. In Address Book, you can find the backup options located under File > Export > Address Book Archive . Save a copy of the exported file somewhere safe on your computer and we’re ready to begin!

For Google, you can do a backup by selecting Contacts from the left hand pane. Then, use the More actions button drop down to select Export. Save the file in a secure location.

For Microsoft Outlook, you can back up your contacts by selecting File > Export > Contacts to a list .

Open Sync Services by navigating to Outlook > Preferences >.

In the menu, select Sync Services .

NOTE : You should probably be careful here of any third-party sync services you have turned on. This can result in all sorts of issues like duplicated contacts or incorrectly merged contacts.

This will present you with multiple options, including calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. Microsoft Outlook can sync with Apple Address Book, iCal and MobileMe. Select the option you’d like and Outlook will keep your contacts in sync!

Launch the Address Book program on your Mac, and select Address Book > Preferences under the file menu. It should pull up a dialog that looks like this.

Select the option to Synchronize with Google, and click the Configure button. It should ask you for your Google Account and password. This method works with Gmail, Googlemail and Google Apps accounts. Enter it in and click OK.

NOTE : Currently, address book groups are not synced to Gmail. This is something they will add in the future.
