Travel: Rachael Wheeler discovers Thailand has something for everyone

Some went elephant trekking, others sought out some culture, a few headed to the jungle and many just chilled out in the south.

Despite being inundated with recommendations, I wanted to do it my own way, which essentially meant I wanted to do a bit of everything.

So my trip to the Land of Smiles would start in Bangkok and move on to Pattaya before flying down to the island of Koh Samui. The first thing I did on landing in Bangkok was book a massage at my hotel, the Centara Grand.

An hour later, having been beaten into a pleasurable pulp, I hit the shopping district, where there are hundreds of local stalls intertwined with designer stores like Dior and Chanel.

I even spied a frock I’d been after for ages in Topshop. But dragging myself away from more shoes I didn’t need, it was time to visit the Grand Palace and take hundreds of photos that people won’t ever look at on Facebook. My snaps don’t do it justice anyway – the sheer scale of the palace, combined with the attention to architectural detail undoubtedly makes this Bangkok’s most famous landmark.

My next dose of culture came in an entirely different, yet equally insightful form – pootling along the Chao Phraya River in a sturdy little barge, past swish hotels and huts on stilts.

The nightlife in Bangkok was a real highlight. After taking in the view across Bangkok from the Centara Grand’s 55th-floor Red Sky Bar we hit Royal City Avenue, a strip of nightclubs favoured by the locals. It was a fantastic night.

It did, however, mean I fell asleep for the entire journey to Pattaya the following morning.

Great if you like waking up and being presented with palm trees lining a glittering turquoise sea, not so much if you have limited time in Thailand and want to count any mode of transport as a sort of tour.

I was staying at the Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya, a newly-opened hotel, themed around the Lost World.

And from the hundreds of flaming torches to the monkey that stole my smoothie, I wasn’t disappointed.Aimed at the family market, kids can do their thing in the waterpark, while the adults hang out at the pool bar.

Being halfway between the two, I did a bit of both.

I barely left the resort, only travelling beyond the hotel for an afternoon of elephant ­trekking at the renowned Pattaya Elephant Village.
