Our Town: Relay for Life excitement this weekend

Drop everything and try to be there. This Saturday and Sunday are some of the busiest days in Our Town, as nearly everyone is involved in the Relay for Life event each year at the ABMS-North athletic field on the corner of Ashley and Will Lee streets. With Saturday's opening ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the survivors lap and other events going on through 10 p.m., the day is packed with fundraising activities to interest all ages. Don't miss the excitement of joining the American Cancer Society and the local Relay for Life chapter in the fight against cancer. The closing ceremony will be at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. RFL SCHEDULE RELEASED for May 14-15: After the Anchor Bay High ROTC Color Guard Survivor's Lap, at 10 a.m., the ABHS Chorale will perform our National Anthem. At 11 a.m., Zumba will be led from the stage. At noon, a survivors' luncheon will be held in the tent. Events on stage include: noon, Blues Brothers/Buddy Holly; 1 p.m., Soon 2 B Band; 2 p.m. Jack Sparrow; 3 p.m. The fight back ceremony, where the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life members join in a program geared to the fight against the dreaded disease; 4 p.m., Joe Kozlowski (magician); 5 p.m. Sourmash Band; 7 p.m. Blues Brothers/Buddy Holly; 8 p.m. Rhythmic Grace Band; 9 p.m., New Baltimore Interfaith Choir; 10 p.m. Luminary Ceremony where votives are lit in memory of loved ones and friends who have lost the fight - a breathtaking sight that encircles the edge of the track. Sunday morning at 9 a.m. is the closing ceremony. C'FIELD RELAY FOR LIFE event set for May 21-22: Held at L'Anse Creuse Middle School East, 30300 Hickey Rd., Chesterfield, the Saturday events begin at 10 a.m. with the survivor celebration. Both survivors and caregivers will enjoy activities that offer opportunities to experience healing - receive support and celebrate their collective victory over cancer. The victory lap will be at 10:30 a.m. with the survivors wearing special shirts. Donations for a Luminaria lit bag in memory of or in honor of someone touched by cancer may be made by calling (248) 663-3421. Donations may be given at the event itself, with all monies used to fund the American Cancer Society's mission to save lives and create a world with more birthdays.
