Thomas The Apostle

Whole lot of energy with The Blues Lady

Most speakers are hard-pressed to maintain the attention of students for an hour, but Maria ‘the Blues Lady’ Hawkins did.

The Ottawa musician and motivational speaker had students at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School engaged in song and dance, and offered solutions, with the students’ help, to questions about succeeding and overcoming obstacles. The major obstacle she addressed during the May 5 presentation was bullying.

Bullying didn’t become a focus of her 70-minute presentation for 18 minutes.

But when it did, the 50-some-year-old mother and grandmother didn’t waste any time making her point.

A significant number of students’ hands were raised with questions like: How many like Cadbury chocolate bars? Who’s had an embarrassing moment? And how many have seen bullying happen in the school?

She also told the students she’d give them the answer to a few questions, then supply the questions.

“I am,” was the answer. The questions pertained to who was responsible for doing one’s homework, who’s responsible for you being successful, and who’s responsible for doing something when they witness bullying?

Keys to overcoming bullying include resilience, she said.

“It’s not how high you climb, but how high you bounce after things happen to you,” said Hawkins, who later told The Mercury she was badly bullied as a child.

Now she wants to get the message out that everyone can play a role to resist bullies and bullying, including letting others know about it when it happens, and speaking up with comments such as, “I don’t like the way you’re talking to me.”

She also reminded the students and staff that people often have to learn to distinguish between bothersome incidents and incidents that don’t need to be bothersome.

“Sometimes big trouble isn’t big trouble, but just a little issue,” said Hawkins. She offered a good example by holding up one of the shoes of teacher Lindsay Cunningham.

Yes, she’d taken the shoe, but she noted that no real damage was done. But bullying is another matter, she said.

“If you’re going to talk about solving this problem, say ‘hoo-rah’,” advised Hawkins.

The Irrational Doubting Thomas

“In conclusion, I am saying that either you take the gospel accounts at face value–either as morality tales containing a great deal of wisdom about living a good life, or as actual historical events…”

But Bob, the way an historian would approach stories like this, is not that they “recount actual historical events” — historians don’t take any accounts to do this — but as *evidence* of actual historical events. Take, say, The Gallic Wars. What an historian does is say, “Well, here’s what Caesar *said* happened… and here’s what X said, and here’s what Y said. And when we did a dig in Provence, what we found was this, and these coins had this inscription” etc. etc. From that evidence, the historian declares what she believes to have really happened.

Off topic. I’ve been thinking about the Children of Israel and their desire for a King (I guess that last line in the Salon article on Mises stuck with me). Also about how the Negative rights (don’t encroach on the person or property of another) are found in the Ten Commandments. How it seems like God has a set of laws for family relationships (honor thy father mother, thou shalt not commit adultery) and another set for other relationships (thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness). Is our system of government inherently immoral according to God’s Commandments? Is anyone writing about this?

Why is it irrational to have a fairytale role model? After all, a role model is only to provide some ideological inspiration, it’s not as if anyone expects their role model to also be a mentor, answer questions, and make coffee.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”

The trouble is of course, once you start believing in stuff that you have never seen, and have no evidence for, where does it end? How do you know what not to believe in? Without evidence how can you sort rubbish from reality?

You apparently missed the whole point of my post. Thomas had seen all kinds of evidence for these things. It would be like me telling you, “Tel, I just flew here on a plane.” And you say, “What?! There’s no way people can fly in machines. Until I see you do that with my own eyes, I won’t believe.
