VALLEY
• NEW MELONES RESERVOIR — The kokanee are biting in a downright frenzy, reports Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods in Angels Camp, with double hookups becoming more common. The fish are in the 14- to 15½-inch range and loaded with plankton. Trollers should begin off of Glory Hole Point and head to the spillway and right up to the dam face. The kokes are holding from 30 to 45 feet and hitting Glitterbug Micro or RK Lures Micro Hootchies, Wedding Rings, Father Murphy's Bugs, Uncle Larry's Spinners, or Apex lures trolled behind smaller Glitterbug silver, pink or chartreuse Teardrop Dodgers. The hot scents for shoepeg corn are garlic, Carp Spit, or anise. Guide Gary Burns got limits on all trips this week, and said the fish are "fighting hard." Bass aren't biting in the unstable weather, but should pick up once the sun comes out. Crappie in the 2 to 3-pound range have been taken with small to medium minnows or minijigs near rocky flat areas where water and feed are running into the lake. Bear Cove has been productive. • SAN LUIS RESERVOIR and O'NEILL FOREBAY — Ly Tu of Ly's Fishing Goods in San Jose said high winds and rain have limited action on the main lake. Most fishermen are hitting the Forebay with pile worms or anchovies for stripers ranging up to 7 pounds. Fishermen have to work through a number of small fish before landing a legal striper. Lucky Craft 128s and white Magnum 7-inch flukes in pearl white or all white continue to be popular for fish in the 16- to 19-inch range. The lake is nearly full. • McSWAIN RESERVOIR — The McSwain Marina is being run by the Merced Irrigation District and is open Wednesday through Sunday. Weather kept anglers off the water over the weekend, but a 4-pound rainbow was taken off the handicapped docks on Power Bait with the brush pile producing limits on chartreuse Power Eggs with scales combined with white Power Bait. Trollers have been pulling night crawlers behind Ford Fender dodgers for limits near the spillway near the surface to 20 feet.
