Popular Malaysian DJ to wed 4th wife

By Noorsila Abd Majid

Tell Salih Yaacob that polygamy is tough and chances are the popular Malaysian radio DJ/funnyman - who is set to take on wife no.4 - will agree with you.

"I'm not marrying more than one wife for fun," the 50-year-old polygamist says. "I'm doing it for religious reasons, and with full responsibilities. If you want fun, don't marry."

His soon-to-be fourth wife is a 24-year-old local university student, whom the Sinar FM deejay met during a performance in Pangkor last November.

Yes, she is his fan. "From wanting to know how I handle my three wives and 11 children, we got closer and exchanged SMSes and phone calls," he adds with a chuckle.

Their wedding will take place sometime in August, after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

As unbelievable as it may sound, all his three wives have given their blessings for him to fulfill his quota of four wives.

"I will not enter into a fourth marriage without my wives' consent," he admits. "They've done so much for me. I owe my success to them."

"We discuss things in the open. I try to practise polygamy according to the real teachings of Islam. Good intentions, fairness, open discussions and spirituality are important in polygamous marriages."

Citing that a lot of men tend to abuse the polygamy law, he adds, "Women is a trust from Allah. In the Quran, it's stated that a man's duty is to protect, to guide, to provide for and to take care of women. Because women are created to be physically weaker than men. But unfortunately, it's not happening in today's world. We have many women, but not many good men."

Just for the record, two of Salih's wives are single mothers. All of them are full-time housewives. "My first wife is going to quit her job soon. Even she is three years older than I am," he explains. "I don't deliberately go out and find young virgins to marry."

A twist of fate and all the women asked for his hand in marriage. "I didn't plan it. They approached me. It happened by God's grace."

Well, he could have said no. But Salih says he feels that it's his calling and it is his duty to care for the women that love him.

"I want to show people that polygamy - if practised according to the real teachings of Islam - isn't a bad thing," he opines. "But it's not for everybody. You must be spiritually inclined in order to understand it well.
