Oxford Man Describes World War II Experience
Carleton Treat, of 306 Quaker Farms Road, s had more than his share of excitement in his 91 years, much of it unwelcome.
One of the more interesting and yet most difficult stories for him to tell is his experience during World War II.
The Oxford Historical Society recently interviewed Treat, one of Oxford’s last surviving World War II heroes, about his experiences serving in Gen. Patton's Fourth Infantry when Treat traveled across France, Luxemburg, Belgium and into Germany.
The following is a transcription from that interview:
"We were in a wooded area, and we were being attacked. These mortar shells were coming down all over, and three of them hit a tree right over my head. One of those pieces of mortar ricocheted and hit me. It tore out my whole side. It took about three pounds of flesh. It went between my hip and my ribs. Also, one came down past my ear and went right down through and broke my shoulder off.
"After it happened, I walked backwards from the lines. I didn't know where I was going. I finally found a medic, and he guided me to a little medical center. After they looked at me, they were shaking their heads and saying, 'How in the world did you ever get back here?'
"They loaded me on a jeep right across the hood on a stretcher. They took me back to a hospital in France. There they took out the piece of shrapnel that went down my shoulder and was down inside of me. They cut a hole in my back and fished it out. Then they shipped me over to England. I was in the hospital in England for three or four months before they brought me back to the United States.
"In the process of this getting wounded and everything, I came down with this blood disorder, called migrating chronic thrombophelbitis. It is a mouthful. It is rated as the most life threatening disease in the world.
"I ended up in West Haven in the VA Hospital with blood clots in my body, here and there. I had blood clots in places you can't imagine in my body. Finally I had a doctor on the outside. He said, "This is absolutely ridiculous what you are doing." He said I should go onto a blood thinner and stay on it. I got out of the VA hospital after he did this, and I have been on it ever since. It's been 60-something years.”
After Treat got out of the hospital and out of the service, he was unable to find work. "Nobody would hire me. They all said that my health was too much of a liability for them," Treat recalls.

JD 790 w/70 Bucket Loader - MyTractorForum.com - The Friendliest ...
The 790 will not lift the wood pellets even with the loader lift capacity shim modification. The main reason I got rid of my 790 was to find something that would do just what you are trying to accomplish (see my previous threads). I wound up purchasing a 3320 with a 300CX; even the 3320 with a 300CX had to have the hydraulics turned up a bit before it would handle the pellets (and you need plenty of ballast). Hope this helps.
